    Story Behind the Song
I had the music to this song for about four months before we started making the record, and I wrote the lyrics a couple of days before I started recording the vocals. It’s autobiographical, I guess, and I was just writing about how I was feeling about my life at the time, and how you can transcend your past, but you always carry a piece of it with you. There is a lot going on in this song musically—more than you can really hear. I love the strings, but they kind of cover a couple of things up. Still, Bryan did as good a job as anyone could have done mixing it, and it sounds great.

    Lyrics
I’m thinking in ways that no longer leave me hollow
And I’ve chosen a path I know to be true
So happy to know I no longer beg and borrow
But remembering trials and times I once knew

When they used to look down on me
Did it make them feel better?
To break me with their anger when I asked why?

The sins are forgiven the details forgotten
But a bit of the bitterness lingers inside
When they used to get down on me
Did it make them feel smarter?
To kill me with their laughter when I asked why?

You left me in a crowd, alone and screaming out loud
Somehow I learned to live this life so sweet, so sour

I kept in my heart all the faith of a child
But I held it so tight I could take it no more
I let go of the hope that somehow I might make it
And then curiously it showed up at my door

When they used to make fun of me
Did it make them feel cooler?
To answer me with nothing when I asked why?

You left me in a crowd, alone and screaming out loud
Somehow I learned to live this life so sweet, so sour
This life so sweet, so sour
This life so sweet, so sour
