    Story Behind the Song
This might be my favorite song on the record. It has a very distinct, memorable, sing-a-long melody, and it has a great feel to it that makes you feel like you’re listening to a 60s album. I also like it because it has an unusual arrangement—chorus/bridge/chorus/bridge/chorus—but it doesn’t sound irregular or uncomfortable. This is the only song on the record that I knew exactly what it was supposed to sound like before we started recording. Every instrument, every note—everything, in particular the crashing in of the symphony and three-part harmony on the second chorus, was well planned. It took a long time, and a lot of work, but we came pretty close. As far as writing it goes, when I was twenty-two I heard the chorus in my head at work one day, but it sat on the back burner for a year until I was able to come up with the bridge part, which I don’t really remember writing. The entire time, I always heard John Lennon’s voice singing it. I still can’t hear anyone else’s voice singing it, so I think I may have been trying to mimic his voice while I was recording vocals for this song. The last thing I like about this song is its message—EVERYTHING’S GONNA BE FINE!

    Lyrics
    So Shangri-La’s on its way
The sky looks very different today
Prizes and tithes we had to pay
To hold onto our beautiful remains

And now we steal a way to heal our hearts from what was done
We have our lust but we can’t trust the smile of anyone
What if instead you asked your friend to look with you over head?
The clouds will crack to take us back to when our blues were red

    So Shangri-La’s on its way
We’ve called upon the dawn to waste the gray
Praying for sun to change the day
And breed the light so we might kill the shade

Why don’t you know the seeds you sow will come to life one day?
Abandon this so you won’t miss these simple things I say
I told you now, I told you then it was with you all along
So find your soul and fill the hole to right all that was wrong

    So Shangri-La’s on its way
The sky looks very different today
Prizes and tithes we had to pay
To hold onto our beautiful remains
