    Story Behind the Song
The guitar part was written first starting with the verse part in the late 80's. Originally, there were three verses. The lyrics received a complete overall in the late 90's. Now there's a unified cadence, two verses, a bridge, the title is a little more prominent, and the instrumental part is shorter.

Previous recordings of the old version include fancy lead guitar parts and better vocals. This recording was a quicky, but features the new lyrics and the cool new bridge.

The word "Retreat" is probably normally considered a negative term as in "giving up" or "defeat". This song points out the positive perspectives, especially those known to people who enjoy church retreats and the like. We all need a little break from the routines from time to time. A change of pace in a beautiful place can revive the soul.

    Lyrics
    Retreat

Been workin' hard, the job's hardly done.
I'm spread too thin, I'm flat, spinnin' numb.
I've lost my style, I'm losin' the knack.
I've got to find a way back on track.
    So ...

    I'm leavin'. I'm on a retreat.
    I'm cruisin' to avoid defeat.
My lowly routines have come to a stop.
I'll be climbin' to the mountaintop.

I asked for help without sayin' please.
Was barkin' up, up all the wrong trees.
But now I'm saved, I'm saved by The Bell.
I pray I'll hear that ring for a spell.
    'Cause ...

    I'm leavin'. I'm on a retreat.
    I'm cruisin' to avoid defeat.
My lowly routines have come to a stop.
I'll be climbin' to the mountaintop.

You can come along. We'll explore together
some reason and rhyme through the nasty weather.
    Yeah ...

    We're leavin'. We're on a retreat.
We're jammin'. Got to find the beat.
We're bustin' right out in need of a rest,
but you haven't seen the last of us yet.
    No, no, no ...

    We're leavin'. We're on a retreat.
    We're cruisin' to avoid defeat.
Our lowly routines have come to a stop.
We'll be climbin' to the mountaintop.
