This song is about the consequences of bands like Green Day and Rancid going to major labels. Suddenly, punk became the cool thing to do and jocks, who knew nothing about the scene or DIY ethic--nor did they attempt to understand it--started showing up at shows. Then came the fashion punks. Anyway, I'll get off my soapbox.

    Story Behind the Song
You might notice a catchy chorus in this song that is not present in the others. That chorus was influenced by the Zero Boys.

Just before I was in The Runs, I purchased the "Vicious Circle" LP (by the way, if you do not have it, I highly recommend this record. It has since been dually re-released by Lookout and Panic Button Records, so it's easy to get). Anyway, that was my favorite record for about a year and I wanted to start a band just like them. However, I found pretty quickly that I couldn't write songs like that. I wrote only one song that had that catchy punk sound; it was not
"Overkill," but another song which did not fit in with The Runs' stuff at all, but I really liked the chorus, so I built another song around the chorus. That song was "Overkill."

Actually, I think that it was the first Runs song I wrote.

Now that I have bored you half-to-death.
