Story Behind the Song
I wrote "Clear and Open Eyes" after I spent a day taking my old friend Paul to a cancer clinic in Northern California. After he went in to see the doctors, I sat in the waiting room watching the people. I saw people in all stages of dealing with their illness: the fighters, all full of energy and optimism; the denyers, thinking about everything else but their illness; and the weary, beaten down by the medical horrors they'd endured.
At one point I needed to ask a question about something, so I tapped the shoulder of a woman who was standing in line to sign in. She turned around and looked me in the eyes, and I could see instantly that she had completely let go of everything in the world that had ever caused her pain. She was completely present in that moment, in that space, as if she and I were the only two people on earth. Her eyes were so clear and open that it startled me. I was so stunned that I forgot my question.
When Paul and I got back to Paul's studio, he took a nap, and I recorded the basic track to this piece in one take, writing it as I went along. I rewound the tape and recorded the melody, and that is what you hear on this track.
Haiku:
her time is precious
she releases all her pain
and opens her eyes
