    Story Behind the Song
A response to Kop Kulture. Based upon a grafitti'ed phrase in Paris during the May 1968 uprisings: "Inside each of us lies a sleeping cop; he must be killed." Amerikkka has become a nation of people whose inner policemen have awakened -- cop shows such as "NYPD Blue" and "Law and Order" and even "Cops", not to mention snitch shows such as "America's Most Wanted", lend a sinister fascistic subtext to society. We are sold a myth of the police as "good guys", while their true function in society is quite the opposite: we are all their potential targets, they are here to keep us in line. True freedom means an end to internalizing kop kulture.

    Lyrics
Police are busting into lives again
    True entertainment through pain
On TV and in our routines
Victims and felons are all we can be
    Or pigeons for State stooges
    Whose slapstick maims and bruises
Keystone Kops chased out of town
Replaced by bloody sights and sounds
    CHORUS
But if you want to commit homicide
    Start with the cop inside
    Don't cop out (3x)
    The highways of our repression
    Are paved with good intentions
Black cops, brown cops, gay cops
    Where does it all stop?
When you're beating your own kind
    Flushing history in your mind
The union may up your pay
But it won't wash the murder stains away
    CHORUS
Rather than leave on a sour note
Or tote the poverty of the vote
    Only world citizens united
Can hope to turn the tide
    More videocams in our hands
    And other bold creative plans
But without capital and State critique
    Any resistance remains weak
    CHORUS
