Someone remarked "think Weber & Rice". Kind of an over-the-top
pretentious piece that keyboard lovers could like. |
CD: Too Many Singers
Credits: Words & Music: Errol Allahverdi - Vocals by special guest John Blanco - Everything else by Errol |
Story Behind the Song
This piece is made up of two different inspirations.
First, the opening melody, which is repeated in variations
throughout the piece (except in the vocal section) came
upon me several years ago. While to some it may sound
somewhat schmaltzy, it came from listening to the
romantic-period classical music from Saint Saens,
Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Chopin, as well as the
likes of George Gershwin..
Secondly, the vocal melody and lyrics were written when
I was going through a very difficult period in my life. It is
a bit autobiographical. When everything in my life already
seemed like it was going wrong, September 11th
happened. But then the bad news didn't stop there. It
seemed every week brought its own surprise for the
worse. I knew it would end. I would hit bottom and start
to rebuild.
One night I was banging on my piano when I found that
the two different themes were complementary. I made
the variations on the first theme to reflect (in my
imagination) different aspects of my life.
I tried doing the vocals myself, but not being a very
experienced or trained singer, I could not get it the way
I wanted. I asked my good friend John to do them for
me. So, one night I went to his studio and directed his
singing without giving him a chance to learn it first and
make it his own. This approach might have been a little
frustrating for John but allowed me to get what I
originally heard from the song. He did a great job.
Lyrics
Another day's coming
you know I know it's no surprise
No matter what today brings
tomorrow I'll still be alive
Bad days are all around me
the good ones are so hard to find
I keep searching for the moments
that remind me God is kind
A new day is here now
but I wake up and it's still the same
I struggle as I wonder
will I be falling more today
Bad days are all around me
Are you listening to a word I say?
I keep searching for the moments
that remind me God is kind
And it's been so hard
these past few years and all the tears
Yes it's been so hard
I've got to win my life back now
I've got to change
but I don't know how
Another day's coming
you know I know it's no surprise
No matter what today has brought
tomorrow I'll still be alive
I keep fighting off despair
I know there's hope
but I don't know where
I keep searching for my God who is kind
So here I am now at a crossroads in my life
Not sure in which direction I should turn
There's still so much for me to learn
It's up to me
I stand alone
I have to bring myself back home
But it ain't so bad
this life of mine I'm going through
No, it ain't so bad
I'm goin' through some hard times
I know they're not forever
I want to work it out
and see it come together
It ain't so bad
No, it ain't so bad
So, here I am now at a crossroads of my life
