A song written for my wife in the vein of "old Chicago." |
Credits: Trane Francks (all instruments) |
Story Behind the Song
After yet another perfect day in the park with my family, I
was moved to pen a song for my wife to share some of the
thoughts I had as I watched her that day. The song was
written here at home while my family was away on vacation.
(I was stuck here at home, working on a project.)
It took about 40-50 hours from the time I began working
on the structure till I managed to come up with the final
mix. The music itself stemmed from me fooling around with
my fretless bass. I was working on some Jaco-type stuff,
just enjoying the "mwah" that the fretless delivers so well.
As I worked through the bass structure, the horn lines began
forming in my mind. Soon, what I "heard" was more like an
old Chicago tune than Jaco Pastorius. The chord progressions
were definitely inspired by the fretless sound, however.
Some of the more interesting aspects of recording the
song involved using my Line 6 POD 2.0 in unconventional
ways. For example, the three horn parts and the vocals
were all recorded using the POD. Using the POD with the
backing horns, for example, enabled me to get a more
trumpet-like texture by using a black panel model. For the
lead horn part, the tube preamp model gave the flugelhorn
its characteristic warmth. Mic techniques, using a Shure
C606, also coloured the horn tones (off-mic versus on-mic
recording).
The keyboard was also recorded using the POD. The
Yamaha PRS-195 has very basic, i.e., uninspiring, organ
patches. I used the POD's tube preamp model and rotary
speaker effect to create a more Hammond-like distortion
and grind. The track sounds completely obnoxious on its
own, but sits rather well in the mix.
Instruments used on the song were:
Drums: Drag and Drop Drummer Lite: modified dry kit loops
Bass: 2001 Fender Japan JB62-77FL '62 reissue fretless
Jass Bass
Guitars: 1997 Fender Japan ST72-68 '72 reissue Stratocaster
Horns: 1975 Besson Model 2-20 flugelhorn
Keyboard: Yamaha PRS-195, Organ 2 patch
All recorded with Cakewalk Guitar Tracks 2
Lyrics
A walk in the park
That's what you said
The sun plays in your hair
It glows about your head
We've got the kids in tow
The perfect place to go
Saturday in the park
Kids are running
All around the place
All screams and laughter
As I look upon your face
How did it come to be
You'd spend your life with me
Saturdays in the park
You stuck with me
Through thick and thin
I know sometimes that you thought
We would never win
And I have to say
I'm glad you're here
Come a little closer
I love it when you're near
[ solos ]
A walk in the park
That's what you said
The sun plays in your hair
It glows about your head
We've got the kids in tow
The perfect place to go
Saturday in the park
