Story Behind the Song
I wrote this song as a Father’s Day gift for the man who has everything. For the man who has been there for me through the temperamental times of Volkswagen ownership, emergency dog repairs and even a cold Humboldt night in my old 1975 International school bus. Since the age of sixteen, I have looked up to and measured all other men against the man I call my Daddy Gene. Many of us have, to say the least, other than traditional families. Nevertheless, family is family. I am proud to say he is a part of mine.
Lyrics
Daddy’s been a sailor all his life.
Had a big dog, had some kids and a wife.
But you know things don’t always go the way we plan,
Now he’s livin’ in our house and he’s Momma’s biggest fan.
Even though we come from a different family tree,
Eight years under the bridge Daddy, it’s your destiny.
Sometimes I think I’s born the wrong place in time.
If that were true Daddy, you wouldn’t have been mine.
Chorus:
My Daddy’s hands, give me shelter from the storm
My Daddy’s hands, always ready to give more
My Daddy’s hands, pick me up when I’m feelin’ low
My Daddy’s hands, await to rock my baby slow,
Yeah yeah yeah yeah…..
You give me support and inspiration I needed
Now my laundry’s been washed, Daddy my garden’s been weeded.
I’m buildin’ my nest where I raise my only son,
Down on Sisar creek under the Ojai Valley sun…
Chorus:
My Daddy’s hands, give me shelter from the storm
My Daddy’s hands, always ready to give more
My Daddy’s hands, pick me up when I’m feelin’ low
My Daddy’s hands, await to rock my baby slow,
Yeah yeah yeah yeah…..
