Story Behind the Song
written by armstrong and Seay and recorded in one take with Landauer on drums. Claps, guitar and keyboard were overdubbed later that week. This track came together almost effortlessly, due in large part to Armstrong's head of inspirational steam. dude came in the studio with this idea and the lyrics and coaxed the raw funk out of his partner, Maurice Seay, and Landauer, who was running the session at MH2. Armstrong, full of spirit and encouragement for everyone involved, seemed charged with a sense of destiny as the 44 year-old bus driver for Denver Public Schools screamed, "I can't be complacent like the rest,". And the honest become introspective as he asks "And where do you sit within this circle?". The message: to live and evolve, we must, each of us, let go of the b.s. to which we stubbornly cling, with which we quell our fears and placate the demands of our higher selves to be more than ego. To funk is to become.
