Story Behind the Song
Governors Island, New York City.
Home and workplace to thousands of Coast Guard personnel and their families.
Home, also, to MILLIONS of cockroaches. Twice a year the entire island is sprayed and bombed in an effort to wipe out the infestation. Twice a year the roaches thumb their collective feelers at the puny humans.
"Roach, Rattle, & Roll" was written in one afternoon. It was then performed and recorded live the following week at the 7th Annual Enlisted Men's Wives Club Talent Show where it was awarded "Most Original Act."

Roach, Rattle & Roll

Written and Performed by JD "redkirk" McLeod
March 1983
Well, Man's been around a million years or so
I've been told he can roll from any punch that's thrown
He's a master, they say, of ad-dapt-tay-she-un
Well, he's conquered the poles, he's conquered the seas
I expect to hear soon that he's conquered disease
But there's a creature I've found that defies extermination
Well, Man is big and clumsey and slow
But this little fellow is smart, doncha know
His survivial instincts are FAR above reproach
Europe's got him, the Soviets do,
China, the islands and Americas, too
I'm speaking to you of none other than the cockroach!
Well, Roach, Rattle and Roll!
Look at those roaches go!
Look at'em scurry, look at'em hurry on by!
We can swat, we can kick, we can scream and yell
We can give'em our worst, we can give'em --well
The roaches will be here no matter how hard we try
Well, we spray and we bomb, and we swat, and we curse
But, we always seem to find the problem to gets worse
Well, roaches aren't dumb 'cause roaches know where to hide
In cupboards, and pantries, and under the sink
In thousands of places, I can't even think
Of a single roach that practices Roach-a-cide
"Survivial in numbers!," that's the cry I've heard
And that there's the lesson the cockroach has learned
Time and again we find that this is true
We do what we can, we do more than that
But, the roach just keeps on coming back
Well, we'd better learn to like him
'Cause there's nothing more we can do.
Well, Roach, Rattle and Roll!
Look at those roaches go!
Look at'em scurry, look at'em hurry on by!
We can swat, we can kick, we can scream and yell
We can give'em our worst, we can give'em --well
The roaches will be here no matter how hard we try
Well, Ladies and Germs, I'm talkin' to you
Let me tell you something I never knew
Roaches have a Language that's really out-of-sight!
They've taken' our phrases, a few of our verbs
A sentence or two and mixed-up the words
To sound the way the roaches would have liked
Conversation between two roaches--
Roach #1: Say, I heard you went to the Roach-vies last week
What did you roach?
Roach #2: Well, I went to a Marilyn MonRoach Festival
Roach #1: Sounds pretty Roachy. What'd they Roach?
Roach #2: "Some like it Roach," and "Roaches are a Girl's Best Friend."
Roach #1: Say, did you see last Roaches Late-Late-Roach
Roach #2: No, what were they Roachin'?
Roach #1: "Easy Roacher" with Peter Roach.
Roach #2: Sounds pretty Roachy. Hey, let's go to my place for Roach.
Roach #1: Oh, Yeh? What are ya cookin'?
Roach #2: Roach-A-Roni!
Well, Man's been around a very, very short time
Compared to the Roach, but HE don't mind
The roaches survive and thrive --whatever the cost
Some day Man will scratch that itch
He'll blow himself up at the flick of a switch
Then the roaches will rule after Man's great Holocaust
Well, Roach, Rattle and Roll!
Look at those roaches go!
Look at'em scurry, look at'em hurry on by!
We can swat, we can kick, we can scream and yell
We can give'em our worst, we can give'em --well
The roaches will be here no matter how hard we try
