Rock N' Roll tale of the Battle of Queenston Heights from the War of 1812. The antithesis to Johnny Horton's "Battle of New Orleans."

    Story Behind the Song
I used to work part-time in the library of the University I attended. Not the most exciting of jobs. I spent many a work shift sifting through the stacks, reading whatever caught my fancy on that particular day. One day, I stumbled across a book of Canadian folk songs. One that particularly caught my interest was "the Battle of Queenston Heights." Intrigued, I researched the battle and discovered it was one of many fought on Canadian soil during the War of 1812. I began to add lyrics to the folk song and since the music was lost and unknown (only the lyrics survived) I wrote music to accompany the lyrics. If Johnny Horton's "Battle of New Orleans" was the American perspective of the War of 1812, then Half-Hour Late's "The Battle of Queenston Heights could be the Canadian perspective.

    Lyrics
Upon the heights of Queenston one dark October day
Invading foes were marshaled in battle's dead array
Brave Brock looked up the rugged steep and planned a bold attack
"No foreign flag shall float" said he "Upon the union Jack"

His loyal hearted soldiers were ready everyone
Their foes were thrice their numbers but duty must be done
They started up the fire swept hill with loud resounding cheers
Brock's inspiring voice ran out "Push on brave volunteers"

    Yo Ho Canadians
We held our ground with pride
From Secord's stroll to Voltigeurs and Tecumseh's mighty cry
    Yo Ho Canadians
We'll burn that house to white
Born into a nation's cheer at the Battle of Queenston Heights

But soon a fatal bullet pierced through his manly breast
And loving friends surround him around that hero pressed
"Push on" he said "Don't mind me" and ere the set of sun
Canadians held the rugged steep the victory was won

Each true Canadian soldier laments the death of Brock
His country told its sorrow in monumental rock
And if a foe should ever invade our land in future years
His dying words will guide us on "Push on brave volunteers"

    Yo Ho Canadians
We held our ground with pride
From Secord's stroll to Voltigeurs and Tecumseh's mighty cry
    Yo Ho Canadians
We'll burn that house to white
Born into a nation's cheer at the Battle of Queenston Heights
