Story Behind the Song
Born 1887, Marcus Garvey had great entrepreneurial drive. He came to the U.S. in 1916 and founded the UNIA (Universal Negro Improvement Association) in 1917. Garvey preached the redemption of Black people by repatriation to Africa. He soon published a newspaper in New York called The Negro Cry which took as its motto Garvey's Black nationalist rallying cry....
"One God, One Aim, One Destiny."
Lyrics
MARCUS MOSIAH GARVEY
GONE DOWN IN BLACK HISTORY
MARCUS MOSIAH GARVEY
GONE DOWN IN BLACK HISTORY
Born in the parish of St. Anns Bay
In the beautiful hills of "J-A"
Humble beginnings he came from
But what a man he did become
Leaving Jamaica he came state side
Inspiring people with Black pride
New York, Chicago, and St Louis
Spoke to the heart when he spoke to us
-CHORUS-
Some say he's a prophet
Some say he's a hero
Some say he's a con man
Which Marcus do you know
Marcus say "Lift up thyself Blackman
To Ethiopia our Father's land"
Forming one Black Nation
Living without confrontation
Repatriation is a must
Oppression, repression,
we've had enough
So get up, get out of Babylon
It's in Africa we do belong
-CHORUS-
Some say he's a prophet
Some say he's a hero
Some say he's a con man
Which Marcus do you know
Marcus Garvey prophecy
"One God, one aim, one destiny"
With visions of Africa we stay alive
On the Black Star Liner we will arrive
Look to Africa and you will see
Where a Blackman will be crowned king
The fulfillment of this prophecy
Is in the person of Haile Selassie
