Story Behind the Song
Me Irish Mother is a song written in tribute to my Great Grandmother, Anna Sheridan McGowan, my Grandmother, Margaret McGowan Zeisler and me Irish Mother, Jacqueline Zeisler Laufer. It was written after her visit to Ballina, in County Mayo, Ireland. She visited the family homestead of our ancestors, at Quignashee and our relatives, including Eamonn, Sean, Michael, Leo and their children. Two years after her visit, I was able to experience the majesty of Ireland first-hand with me Irish Mother.
Lyrics
Me Irish Mother …(Dedicated to Grandma and Grandpa McGowan, Grandma Zeisler, Mom and Joan Kenny Cosgrove)... Chorus: I love me Irish Mother... I love her Irish stew...And I love me Irish Whisky... as much as I love you! Me Mums from County Mayo, was born in Ballina. Her Daddy was a shepherd. He hailed from Castlebar. Chorus: I love me Irish Mother.. I love her Irish stew...And I love me Irish Whisky.. as much as I love you! Me Mother worked for pennies, a seamstress was her trade. Made kilts for English Blackguards, while her concertina played. She cheered for me at fotball, she cried out "Up Mayo!" She'd dance an Irish jig whenever I would score a goal. (Repeat Chorus) I remember all her Irish charm. She protected me and sheltered me from harm. Well, I crossed the River Shannon, over all the hills and glens; went all the way to Dublin, flew across the world and then, I heard the voices calling me to Ireland, once again. So now, I'm back to tell you all, my friends: (Repeat Chorus) Me Mum said "Tundren Scatters!", when she saw me, with surprise.. I said I'd kissed the Blarney Stone, but I missed her loving eyes. (Repeat Chorus Twice) Lyrics by W. Laufer & Jacqueline Laufer / Music by W. Laufer... August, 1999
