Story Behind the Song
Sometimes life throws us a curveball. Something we work so hard for can just be ripped out from underneath us and we have to start over from scratch.
Johnny represents the guy that loses it all. He puts up a good fight, but in the end the powers that be are too strong.
He has no schooling and no other way of supporting his family - he get's drunk one night, get's fed up and kills himself... ashamed that he can no longer provide for his family.
There's a little bit of Johnny in everybody.
Lyrics
Our story starts in a trailor park just west of here. Our protaganist is a guy named Johnny, he's got some problems and fears. Saw him grow from a boy to a man, still problems he must face. See his worried expressions, he's losing the rat race CHORUS:Johnny can't read and Johnny can't write, Johnny's gonna go get in a fight! Johnny can't read and Johnny can't write, Johnny's gonna kill himself tonight! The factory where Johnny won bread closed down just last week. Johnny applied for managment, money for his kids he seeked. Now a thousand workers out on their collective ass. Johnny has no money, and he was so close to the middle class! (chorus) A fundemental establishment, thats what they told him. Get a job to pay the bills and the rest is for him and his kids. If you work hard you'll eventually get to the top, but regardless of your ambitions promotions come from the top! Johnny had enough, he tried to unionize, save his job for him and his friends and tell the world whats behind the facade thats goin' on, here in this factory but the company execs saw Johnny coming, they closed shop, left down just last week. (CHORUS)
