Story Behind the Song
To live is to choose, and for the teenager, discovering how to choose right is one of the most difficult things that families can process. In this song, the singer laments a relationship that took him to "Destination Destruction". In one of the books in the CROSSROADS series (NavPress, 1990), the phrase "bad-influence friend" is used. Most of us can remember a friendship that took us the wrong way. Maybe we were that kind of friend ourselves to someone else.
When a teenager develops the right internal sense of choice, it is a day of rejoicing. When the parent has the right sense of choice to teach, it is likewise a good thing, and I think sometimes that if I had never been a father, my choosing ability might still be suspect at best. I am reminded of the story of the billionaire who was asked by a reporter how he got to be so rich. The billionaire replied: "Right decisions." The reporter inquired further: "How did you get to learn how to make right decisions?" The billionaire answered: "Experience." The reporter stopped for a moment...puzzled a bit...and then bit: "OK, so where you did you get the experience?" The billionaire smiled and replied: "Wrong decisions."
I have met very intelligent kids who were not wise. I have met very intelligent kids who did not exemplify wisdom in problem solving or choosing a life path. We need to make sure we celebrate the right decisions when we find them.
Lyrics
I pick up the phone
And set it down again.
She was the same girl
Who led me down that road of sin.
Destination destruction.
I should have listened
To my mom's advice.
But there has been an obstruction.
Living in a world of vice.
Chorus:
I am the one who would benefit
Choosin' the road that is right.
God would see me throught this mess
If I would stand up to fight.
Not my will but His be done.
A life full of meaning or a life full of fun.
Miles to go before my journey's done.
I'm choosin' the road that is right.
My memory serves up sights and sounds.
They torment me.
How I wish I could bury them
In the depths of the deepest sea.
Destination destruction.
But a Savior came to pull me out.
So bend your ear to listen
What I've found life to be about.
Chorus
