Story Behind the Song
This was the first song that Pleading Innocence ever wrote (before we were even a band) When I was in high school, I would ride to church every Sunday morning with my dad. We would always pass a little white Lutheran church, which was just down the road from our house. When we went by every morning, there usually weren’t too many people there. About a mile down the road was a golf course. They had to build an extra parking lot because so many people were always there, especially on Sunday mornings. My dad would always comment ‘It looks like attendance is up at the church of the open fairway.’ In April of 1999, I was at church and wrote a song about it. A few months later, around the time I graduated high school, Josh and I were hanging out at my house, messing around on guitar. I gave him the song I wrote, and told him that we should make some music for it. I went downstairs to get something, and by the time I came back, Josh was halfway finished with the song.
While it is a humorous look at something most people can probably relate to, it does show us a little bit about priorities. We need to set aside times to be with God. It doesn’t have to be Sunday mornings, but it is important. Spending time with God on a daily basis is important. It’s also good to spend time with other believers. While spending Sunday mornings on a golf course isn’t necessarily wrong, it often reveals what our true priorities are.
Lyrics
Another Sunday morning drive
to where I go every week
passing all those Sunday places
where Sunday people meet
a small white church just down the road
a few cars parked outside
I must be one of the hundreds
that look as they go by
And I know
God is everywhere
I'll be on the greens
so He'll be there
at 8 AM
we're ready to play
I'm here right now
be here all day
Church of the Open Fairway
A few more miles down the road
another Sunday place I see
No more room in the parking lot
a different philosophy
Finally to my destination
thinking of what I passed
Just a great escape from trouble
or an idol to be cast?
is everything so black and white
or do I have a choice?
is time I spend a good reflection
of the things I cherish most?
