Story Behind the Song
In November, 1972, fred spent the evening of that presidential election day jamming/recording at a public tv/radio station studio in Maryland. As we were leaving, the television in the station lobby showed George McGovern addressing a throng of what appeared to be celebrating supporters. We couldn't believe he'd won... He hadn't. This song followed, incorporating an acoustic lick Joe had dubbed "midnight in Madrid."
Recorded at Blue Rock studios in NYC in 1973, Peter had recently taught himself to play the saxophone, and renders a soulful break. Joe borrowed Mike's Martin for the acoustic guitar parts, accompanied by Ken's eerie organ part. David found a vocal melody for Joe's off-the-track chords. Bo and Ken provide the boy chorus. Mike plays a "Yes" inspired bass part.
Lyrics
Taken to task on verdict of haste, jury's guilt lies in myopic taste.
Confined by freedom to see childlike scrawl, not written hand on future's wall.
Chorus:
Celebrate the day (in mourning stay)
Sunlight shows the way (forewarning grey)
Players act your play
Taken to task on question of hate, license to kill is right of state.
Stand in the way and stand quite alone.
Can't stand to watch what isn't shown
Chorus:
Celebrate the day (in mourning stay)
Sunlight shows the way (forewarning grey)
Players make your play
Taken to task on question of height: those are illicit, but these are all right.
Some on the ground know just who they are;
Some in the air have flown too far.
