Story Behind the Song
This song came to me while vacationing in Galveston, Texas with the wife and kids. I had one morning alone with Jasmine, my 12 year old, and we decided to take a walk along the beach, looking for sea shells. At one point I looked up and saw her walking backwards in the surf, her eyes cast down, looking for sand dollars. Amused, I asked her why she was doing that, and she informed me in a tone of voice only pre-teenage girls can muster for their clueless fathers, that the wind was blowing her hair in her eyes, and walking backwards kept it out.
I laughed and asked her why she wasn't afraid of stepping into a nasty clump of seaweed, or a jellyfish or something. She told me she was counting on me to look out for her. An amazingly simple piece of truth, in every way.
As we walked along, her words resonated in me, and the melody just presented itself. We got back to the condo, I picked up my guitar, and there it was.
