When your useful days are at an end and your chips are obsolete...Your hard disk is a’thrashin’, and your memory’s replete...You’re very easy to replace, they will not hesitate...There’s nothin’ that they hate like a slow Server

The Life of a Server
If you’re born into the Server class, it’s there you’ll end your days
Queuein’ jobs and servin’ files for fancier displays
My own poor screen is monochrome and they keep me out of sight
And that sums up the plight of the Server
Well it’s no good wishin’ certain things were different
‘Cause your proper station’s pre-ordained
And it’s “pump that data” to its proper destination
I could do it in me sleep with half me brain
Can’t help wonderin’ what happens to the bytes that leave my ports
Destined for workstations, runnin’ software of all sorts
Exotic applications, of a type I’ll never run
No it ain’t much fun to be a server
Well it’s no good wishin’ certain things were different
‘Cause your proper station’s pre-ordained
And it’s “pump that data” to its proper destination
I could do it in me sleep with half me brain
They keep me runnin’ ‘round the clock, the others they can rest
My SCSI* ports are achin’, my coolin’ fans are stressed
But I’d have lied if I took no pride in the service I perform
Vital is the work of the Server
Well it’s no good wishin’ certain things were different
‘Cause your proper station’s pre-ordained
And it’s “pump that data” to its proper destination
I could do it in me sleep with half me brain
When your useful days are at and end, and your chips are obsolete
Your hard disk is a’thrashin’, and your memory’s replete
You’re very easy to replace, they will not hesitate
There’s nothin’ that they hate like a slow Server
Well there’s nothin’ that they hate…like a slow Server
