The Naked Truth is a song written from the viewpoint of someone who has committed a crime, yet
tries to separate himself from what he has done. Specifically, the lyrical ideas are derived from
the Edgar Allan Poe short story "The Tell-Tale Heart". |

Story Behind the Song
Musically speaking, the drum beat is meant to portray the old man's beating heart that continues to pulse in the murderer's mind, long after the body has been buried. The guitar riff and sound are produced to conjure up the sound of a police siren that continues to get louder and louder, closer and closer, until it ends abruptly at the end of the song. This is meant to illustrate the man's ultimate arrest, as well as
a realization that the madness he continued to deny was just an escape from reality of the crime he had committed (the naked truth).
Further, lyrics such as "when the worst is yet to come" and "half-hearted tales that appear to be small", are meant to be allusions to what the man knows will eventually happen to him, as well as a touch of black humor that we think Mr. Poe would appreciate.
In performance, the main intro bass riff against the bass/snare drum beat is a great release and fun to play. The powerful guitar part really paints the words, especially at the end, and Steve's guitar solo is wildly different at our shows than on this recording.
