The closing lullaby to the stylistic rollercoaster that is, "Boom Boom is Good", "As You Are" finds the band not riding off into the sunset but rather drifting downstream with Huck and Tom to the sound of banjos and cheezy synth strings. The hosanna choruses swoop down and carry the singers off one at a time with a promise to return and rock you another day. |

Story Behind the Song
Another Spreaders song that took the scenic route to completion, "As You Are" existed for years only in demo form in a shoe box in Joel Hatje's mouse-infested apartment in Buggtussle, Nebraska until the band tried performing a full rocking version of it in their stage shows in Chicago. Not satisfied with a mediocre handling of such an exceptional song, the band tried numerous arrangements (including a one-guitar, a la Billy Bragg treatment) before deciding on the dreamy, lilting version you hear now. Each singer takes a verse and then harmonizes on the chorus. The poignant sentiment put forth in the song is compounded when you realize the singer is basically telling himself,"stay as you are". When asked if he felt the definitive version had finally been captured, Joel said,"Yes".
Lyrics
I used to watch T.V.
When I was a little girl.
I used to think that I was waiting
For the start of the world.
(Chorus)
Stay as you are
As you are, as you are.
Stay as you are
As you are, As you are.
La la la la la la la la
Counting cars on the highway.
I'm all locked up in my room.
You can hear the tires whistling.
And they're gonna be home soon.
(Repeat Chorus)
Pirates in the stream
Floating on an eight-inch boat.
Room enough to dream
And we always stay afloat.
(Repeat Chorus)
