    Story Behind the Song
This is an old hymn with Irish/Celtic overtones. I have heard the melody before twice, and the words sung once, before recording my version of it. I was a bit concerned that I had the melody wrong, but I found a web site, www.oremus.org that has midi files of hymns and I listened to their rendition. I decided I was close enough in my interpretation.

The sound of the wind blowing and the chimes are from my Roland GR-30 guitar synthesizer. I'm driving it with my Parker Fly (great guitar). The acoustics are my Taylor 414CE, tuned down ½ step. I began the tune plugged straight into the mixing console into two tracks, and as each subsequent passage was recorded I doubled the guitars. In spite of how apparently simple this recording sounds to me, I think I ended up using about 16 of the 24 available tracks for this song.

The middle section deviation was a spur-of-the-moment-in-the-studio thing. I really like that part. The recording was completed in two evenings, and we took an approach to the sessions I thought was unique, though it turns out the technique is quite common: we broke the song down into steps, or verses, recording one section at a time, and then we digitally pasted the parts together. Isn't modern technology wunnerful?

The song's resolution was a bit of instant inspiration, too. In fact, the resolution chord progression and the middle deviation are my favorite parts of the song.

As a side note, in mid December of 2001 I was performing this song at a coffeehouse in Arlington, Texas and a lady sitting at a close table was softly singing the words in a beautiful contralto. It's moments like that that really make performing a treat for me.
