Story Behind the Song
I woke up one morning from a dream. I was in a fog as I boarded the bus to work. The song started writing itself. I sat down at my computer at work hearing the music and typing the lyrics.
It is about truly living life and it is about death. The songs, the sights, the sensations so acute in those moments before it all slips away.
Lyrics
Tangled it was
frost and watercolor
mingled in the sky
Desert pink it was
hung unreachable
and unthinkable to the eye
Tangled I was
with the smell of sage
curling in my hair
I lay down among the
last of the roses
with their heads
hung in the air
And somewhere off in the distance
the lonely highway
I hear a diesel rumbling down the road
far away
And I try to remember
what it feels like to be a child
should I make my way to roadway
or just lay here and listen - awhile.
Practiced and measured
my words hollow
with no one to hear
I recite
memorized passages to
keep at bay the fear
And somewhere off in the distance
I hear that engine while
becoming something like a beckoning
to the sweet by and by
Now I remember
what it feels like to be a child
The road is just freedom there
A summer holiday
I was tangled, Oh
Tangled, oh no
I was tangled, Oh
Tangled Oh no Oh no
The road is just freedom there
