Story Behind the Song
I wrote this song while I was riding in the back of a pickup through the desert in Baja California. It was HOT, and I was noodling on my guitar when the music just came to me. Then when I had the guitar part the melody popped into my head, so QUICK I got out the mandolin and worked it up! Wrote the first verse and chorus right there too in the first half hour. It all came out so good that it stuck in my head all the way back to Oregon... so here I am right now recording it!
Lyrics
I'm heading down to Mexico
a place for me and my friends to go
So hop into the back if you want to come along
We'll see the world from near and far
and take our chances with the car
So come on in right now
and hit the road with me
We'll Drive, Drive, toward the setting sun
We'll Drive, Drive, the day has just begun
We'll fly down the 5 until we meet the sea
and see what Mexico has got for me
We cross the border easily
and ride the toll road by the sea
How strange the people speak and stare at me
It seems as though we've come so far
but still we get back in the car
It's a long road ahead, hold my hand we'll soon be free
We'll Drive, Drive, toward the setting sun
We'll Drive, Drive, the day has just begun
We'll chase the sun around the world
and taste the ocean breeze
and see what Mexico has got for me
Just as we pull into town
our attention starts to come around
there's so many things for me to see
The sun shines down upon my head
and miles of sand for my feet to tread
so I run to the beach, my God, I'm free
We'll Drive, Drive, toward the setting sun
We'll Drive, Drive, the day is finally done
We'll write our names in the sand
and sleep out by the sea
Now I've seen Mexico I'll never leave
