Story Behind the Song
During one broadcast, the hosts of Sound Opinions, Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot, noted that, to their knowledge, no one had attempted to write a song about how the opinions of music critics don't matter. They said that if anyone could correct this insufficiency to send in the song and, if it was any good, they might play it. We did and they did. Out of a four-step scale: buy it, tape it, skip it or trash it, we received a tape it (or MP3 it) review. Screw the Critics is our offering to all the knowers of the well and good in rock 'n roll who, when itcomes right down to it, don't know what they're talking about.
Lyrics
You sit behind the mike
And say which music we should like
I really wonder who listens
Are the pop charts missing
The value of your thoughts
With music so diverse
And some of it perverse
Will you listen to our song
And tell us that it's wrong
Are you sure you can't be bought?
Who do we have to know to get airplay?
Does our success depend on what you say?
What can we do to get higher on your list?
Is the best advice, screw the critics?
Can you be objective
When taste is subjective?
You can't decide what the world should hear
Is independent music something you like to play
Or is independent music your biggest fear?
Who do we have to know to get airplay?
Does our success depend on what you say?
What can we do to get higher on your list?
Is the best advice, screw the critics?
Are critics just mucicians who can't get a record deal?
That's okay, neither can we
Who do we have to know to get airplay?
Does our success depend on what you say?
What can we do to get higher on your list?
Is the best advice, screw the critics?
So pop our disc in
And let the onslaught begin
Compare us to bands we've never heard
Put us in genres whose borders are blurred
What the hell is pop music anyway?
Who do we have to know to get airplay?
Does our success depend on what the critics say?
What can we do to get higher on your list?
Is the best advice, screw the critics?
