Story Behind the Song
I was walking through Central Park and it was playing on the carousel. I started humming it as I walked through the park and was thinking about this and that and it took on a whole new meaning. It went from this kitschy, 60's, machismo thing to the description of a haunting love affair, a new way to look at love and one's self in love.
Don't get me wrong, I love the kitschy, 60's, machismo thing like everyone else.
A haunting love affair, a new way to look at love and one's self in love. A discovery that things aren't always the way they seem or the way you always heard they should be.
Lyrics
I should've known better with a girl like you
That I would love everything that you do
And I do, and I do, yes I do
I never realized what a kiss could be
This could only happen to me
Can't you see, can't you see
That when I tell you that I love you
You're gonna say you love me too
And when I ask you to be mine
You're gonna say you love me too
I should have realized a lot of things before
If this is love you gotta give me more
Give me more, give me more
(Improv)
I never realized what a kiss could mean
Until you happened to me
Can't you see, can't you see
I tell you that I love you
Say you love me too
Baby please be mine, Say you love me this time
You're gonna say you love me too
Can't you see -- I never realized
What your kiss could mean
Can't you see - I never realized
I'd love everything that you do
I should've known better
