Story Behind the Song
In 1969 I was a student at Texas Southern University in music composition. While studying bebop styles from the '40's and the evolution of Blues to Jazz, I composed this
song in tribute to my Dad. While playing the chords on the piano at home, my Dad picked up his trumpet and began to play.
I knew then I was on the right track!
Later in 1987 I wrote the riff. While playing a Jazz gig at Borders Bookstore,
the Band decided to record. Of course we
definitely added Dad's Bop.
We recorded the first tracks at Pedernales Studios in Spicewood, Texas outside Austin in 1995 and was Engineered by Larry Greenwood. We did additional recording in August of 1996 at Firestation Studios in San Marcos, Tx where the CD was mixed.
We were excited about the producers, James Murray, Ladelle & Gordon Bisel.
This was a really fun recording especially at Willie Nelsons Studio! Wish we had him on the recording!
