Story Behind the Song
No one is born as a parent. We are kids first. My parents taught me responsibility, but I didn't really taste it until I got married and had bills to pay. I didn't learn to think like a parent until I had a kid, so kids have got to back off for a second and realize that this parent thing isn't from medication or some self-help class that everyone is required to take in college.
The song that did not appear on this album was similar: "Parents are people, too" which was a soft lilting 3/4 ballad that has a mom reflecting on her high school prom. In this song, we picked instead an upbeat, sometimes humorous reminder of the journey to parenthood that folks have got to go through.
Lyrics
Two independent people
That love brought together.
Love to help them weather
The tough times ahead.
Two independent people
So young and naïve.
Setting a new course
From the one they had led.
A day would come
When a family would be raised.
When a huge, colossal change
Would come about.
He looked at her and said:
"Is this the better or the worse?
Is this the richer or the poorer?"
Well in case you have some doubt:
Chorus:
Parents are made, not born.
They're made, not flown in from far away.
They're made, not born.
Just like you, who will be a parent someday.
An independent person
Called a teenager.
Growing much taller
And smarter each day.
But feeling like exploring
Those wide open spaces.
Hits the door, erases his family away.
He meets a girl,
And they tie the knot.
And already independence
Hits the skids.
Years pass on
And a grateful father
Calls his dad,
Surrounded by a half a dozen kids!
Chorus
