Story Behind the Song

Lyrics
I was twelve years old when Star Wars first came out:
what an appealing fantasy for an adolescent boy!
You get to rescue a princess, outwit an army,
make some news friends, and play with real cool toys.
But that vision slowly faded as I grew older;
prom dance and college chances were then what inspired.
And now I play an adult as I watch my kids grow bolder,
but still have some fantasies with a tame but sure desire:
I want to window shop with Christine Lavin,
have a beer with Ursula Le Guin and chat an hour or two.
And of such ordinary things are my view of heaven now,
but my most cherished mundane fantasy is growing old with you.
I'd like to go out into space, but I know I'd toss my cookies.
I'd like to take a shot at president, but yet I'm not a fool.
I'd play the game of summer, except I'd flunk out as a rookie.
And I use computers not as GameBoy but as tool.
But I still have some fantasies and tilt at chosen windmills
like see the end of monied politics and hear Woodie Guthrie live.
And there are things I'd gladly fail at like keeping clean and dust-free windowsills,
but our daily life I'll nurture, and with our work it will thrive . . .
in part because . . .
I want to window shop with Christine Lavin,
have a beer with Ursula Le Guin and chat an hour or two.
And of such ordinary things are my view of heaven now,
but my most cherished mundane fantasy is growing old with you.
