Story Behind the Song
Warning: huge assumption coming...I assume that most young men in America, regardless of race, have an anger streak that they carry. This anger streak flares up at both predictable and unpredictable times. I don't know if I can document that beyond my experience. On the unpredictable side of that I have seen anger and have felt anger at times when no one else would have seen it coming. We aren't just talking about the flashes we feel when someone cuts us off on the road. In fact, those aren't the aspects of anger that bothers me.
The anger that bothers me both in experience and in observation, is the anger felt on a lonely Friday night, or just before sleep when you are flat on your back looking at the ceiling. There is private personal processing that gets done, and in that processing we tightrope walk between being a monster or being a saint. If a person lacks the self-control or the wisdom to put the flash of the emotion in check, we give in to the urges and the pulls of an unforgiving spirit. In giving in, we start growing bad stuff.
We start fostering bad attitudes. We "harbor" those feelings that we should send out to sea. (James 3:14)
In the book of James we are encouraged to ask God for wisdom, and that proof of this wisdom may be manifest in a life of "deeds done in its humility" (James 3:13) Wisdom is also said to be "pure, then peace loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere." (James 3:17) The problem is that there are few if any media or influences on a person's life that would push young people into wisdom's path. There is the universal need for wisdom everywhere we turn, but very few young men stop to talk to Yoda in the swamp like Luke Skywalker finally did in Star Wars.
Certainly there are angry young women. The good news is that the admonitions to self-control in the book of James are not gender based. As we wait upon the grace of God to transform our hearts and lives, we find the power and the courage to do what we were made by God to do. Anger may be our "plight" as this song says, but wisdom can be our substance. It is there for the taking.
Lyrics
Chorus:
Such is the plight
Of angry young men.
Angry young men like me.
Such is the plight
Of angry young men.
Angry young men
With rebellion on the mind.
Feel a sense of ugly.
Feel so uptight.
Never unwind.
Such is the plight
Of angry young men.
Caught in a whirl of conflict.
A whirl of a blood that boils.
A never-ending roller coaster frown.
Such is the plight.
Such is the plight.
Chorus
Cut to the quick of tension.
Laughing at other's pain.
Watching a sunrise of disdain.
Such is the...
Such is the plight.
