    Story Behind the Song
By the time a teenager gets to his/her senior year, it is small wonder that senioritis seriously slips in....normally by mid-February, but more often when the final spring weather changes hit. When I was a senior my world got pretty focused on me: where I was going, what I planned to do...and there was that general sense of taking me from the world of small town high school kid into the next chapter, whatever that chapter would be. Like many seniors, I was into my world of friends and events, and paid little attention to any sense of legacy in building into younger students or even building into family. I had my own crusade, and it was for self-fulfillment in the things that I held dear.

I maintain after working with a generation of youth and youth families, that there needs to be some help in closing old chapters in life and opening new ones. Sometimes decisions for the next chapter are based on dealing pain to the folks who have hurt you in the old chapter. Sometimes in our search for self-significance, we make life decisions that either make us feel more important, or at least give us an appearance of self-importance in the eyes of those we have longed to impress.

The graduating senior must be released to his new adventures, but not separated from his roots. He must be reminded of his past but not chained to it. And if college doesn't work out, or for whatever reason that this person decides that coming back home will help him rebound and go out and try again...then the home must be ready to take him in, heal him up, and then kick him out to his next adventure.

The senior needs to understand that life gives us races, and how we finish is the most difficult thing. Many basketball games come down to the last few minutes. Most distance races come down to the last lap, the last mile, the place where you find whether the person trained enough for this moment. We watch professional athletes choke in the clutch situations and then cannot produce the winning score. The senior needs to prepare for his future by not burning the bridges with his past.

    Lyrics
    You've been biding your time
In that house you call a jail.
Got your parents in your face
    Every day without fail.
    Your room is a mess,
    Your homework's undone.
    You want some action.
    You are ready for fun.
    Your 18th birthday
May be coming to you soon.
So it's time to pack your bags
And get out to get some room.
    All your friends tell you
It's time to hit the road.
Get out from the house, boy,
    And loosen your load.
    It's not fair to endure.
It's not right to sing the blues.
    So load up your bags
And put on your walking shoes.
All you need is just a little more time.
And while daddy pays the bills,
It won't cost you a dime.

    Chorus:
    The rest of your life
    Is on the line.
    The decisions you make
Will face the test of time.
    The rest of you life
    Is on the line.
    So don't treat it lightly,
    It may turn out fine.
    But why take the chance
When there's something you can do.
    To heal broken hearts;
It could be up to you.
    The rest of your life...
    The rest of your life...
    The rest of your life
    Is on the line.

    Now all of your friends
Can't make cures for your ills.
And when you're out on your own,
    You discover your bills.
Down the road you see empty.
Down the road you felt bad.
Your buddies up and leave you,
    You think you've been had.
My lad, just smell the coffee.
    Your choices will haunt you.
Beat you up side the head,
They will come back and taunt you.

    Chorus
