The song has a funky and “jazzistic†appeal mixed together. With a regular however broken stroke rhythm guitar and keyboards doing minor7 chords on the back and a soft jazz & blues scales electric guitar solo, it’s a rather fast song with a strong drumbeat. There’s a slower plucking guitar theme in the middle and two combined vocals all along.

    Story Behind the Song
It was created in 1988, when I had a rock song cover band called Abskyw. The lead guitarist, Gabriel Jafet, came up with the lyrics that spoke about destruction of the natural environment. It was a prelude to the ecologic movement that was spread worldwide in the 90’s and exposed the situation of progress, technology and money justifying the devastation of forests and threatening the continuation of a variety of animal species. As an alert to “what will there be after 2000 when we open our windows?†if we don’t start thinking of the consequences of our actions, it condemns the blind capitalistic rush mentality that runs over man’s most important gift: nature. It states that it is our responsibility to protect and preserve nature because we depend upon it to live. I, Camilo Anauate created the music with chords and rhythms I was working on at the time.

    Lyrics

    DEVASTAÇÃO
    (Camilo A. Anauate e Gabriel C. Jafet)

    Fábricas vão crescendo,
    As fumaças invadindo o céu,

    LYRICS TRANSLATED TO ENGLISH:

    DEVASTATION
(Camilo A. Anauate and Gabriel C. Jafet)

    Factories keep on growing,
    Their smoke invading the skies,
    Our life sources disappearing.
    Killing for paper!

A glare rises amongst the woods
    It’s the token of devastation.
    What will happen after 2000
    If destruction doesn’t stop?

The capitalistic progress shows it’s strength
Razing the greens which have once prevailed
Machines leave their traces along the ashes
And governments do nothing to stop this terror!

The environment is annihilated despite of causing no harm.
    Not even reserves are preserved,
Animals get stuck in the flames of burning land,
Now-a-days many of them already in extinction

What will there be tomorrow when we open the windows?
What will there be tomorrow when we open the windows?

Its the human species exterminating what is most beautiful
    And vital in nature.
    Not thinking of the consequences...
    Not thinking of the consequences!
