Story Behind the Song
The film clip chosen for this scoring is the 1925 silent film, "The Merry Widow," starring Mae Murray as Sally O'Hara. The competition actually provided 4 clips from which to choose; the three others were action, seduction, and horror sequences. I chose this clip because I thought it provided more challenge to me.
Combining the obvious rhythmic element of the on-screen dance with the rather free notion of the "fascination" emotion was the most exciting aspect of the little composition. In the end, I chose a pavane as the thematic dance element; it seemed to fit with the mood. In fact, two famous Pavane's, those of Ravel and Faure, provided some small inspiration during the process, although there is no obvious musical connection between those works and my short clip. However, there is a definite relationship between my work and French Inpressionism (and Expressionism.)
The composition and transcription into Cakewalk Home Studio took 2 days.
