Spain loses the 'Rock of Gibralter' |
CD: Don't FRET
Label: Ericksong Records
Credits: Troy Erickson, Fernando Santamaria |
Story Behind the Song
Fernando had a very cool 'Spanish' sounding guitar riff and we needed some lyrics to try and do it justice.
So we did some research on Spain and the Spanish revolution and finally settled on the final battle for Gibraltor
in which Spain lost the 'Rock' to the English for the final time. The lyrics are very much a play by play of the events
of that final battle, from the point of veiw of the Spanish. There a few metaphors here and there to highlight
certain geographical locations on the 'Rock' itself, such as 'The Rock Gun', 'Signal Hill' and 'Devil's Tower'.
Once the idea of the 'Rock of Gibralter' was realised as the song's theme, the song came together pretty quickly,
with the lyrics being written in one evening and the song itself arranged basically in a few hours.
It's some of the most fun we've ever had writing a song and we hope others will enjoy listening to it...
Lyrics
Daybreak in a Spanish town
and the sea is crashing all around
the 'Pillars of Hercules' protect it from the Ocean's breeze
But danger navigates once more
Demons lurk upon the rocky southern shore
forever more a legacy of war
Gibralter, I fear for the 'Rock Gun', is under siege
Gibralter, I hear you, the fortress has fallen once again
And the battle ships circled 'round
and when their forces hit the ground
'Signal Hill' had fallen ill as cannons fired at will
For three long days and three dark nights
they waged a war for power
And when the smoke had cleared
The Rock became the 'Devil's Tower'
(chorus:)
Night falls on a Spanish town
and the black sky rain is crashing down
they watch it float away across the strait....
That bears it's name...
Gibralter, I fear for the 'Rock Gun' is under siege
Gibralter, I hear you the fortress has fallen again
..........fallen once again!!!!
