The guy in the story knows what’s right. He’s been told a thousand times by his parents what’s right and what’s wrong, and to be careful when he’s out with his friends. It’s not that he’s a bad kid, he just gets caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time. He just KNOWS the situation he’s in is bad, and the song being played in his head repeatedly tells him so, but he refuses to act upon his convictions with disastrous results… |

Story Behind the Song
I wrote this song about 2 years before it was recorded. It was written for my songwriting class I had back in Undergraduate school. It just happened to be found while looking for something to spark the songwriting interest.
Lyrics
The Song Kept Playing
Words and Music by James E. Hearn
I’ll stand in complete defiance,
Even if you let me.
As I put on my disguise,
I know you’ll keep telling me,
How much you love me,
And how much you care.
“I’ve told you once and I’ll say it again,
Take care, ‘cause it’s mean out there.”
CHORUS
And the song kept playing,
In his mind, but out of sight.
In his head, over and over,
He knows it should be right.
I know you’re concerned and you mean well
Could we not go on this trip?
You know every time that I walk out,
For me it might mean RIP
Am I ready for the challenge?
Can I make fight?
My friends say shit’s cool, but
I just know it’s not that right.
CHORUS
BRIDGE
Now momma, please stop cryin’,
Dad I should have heard you say.
I’d tell sorry for what I’ve done,
But now I’m dead, and there’s hell to pay.
