Story Behind the Song
I was at a beach this summer, and as I, a little Iowa boy, was transfixed by the ocean, I noticed a Cincinnati girl with that same magical look in her eyes. It was one of those things I had to write about.
I still don't like the bridge, and there's parts I'd like to change, but its still pretty damn good.
Lyrics
You sit and watch the tide rise, like the sea folds just for you. From the look in your eyes, I think it might be true. And I can't wash the shirt you borrowed, the night you were too cold. Its the only part of me that you found good enough to hold.
Slow dance on the ballroom floor, you rise up on your toes. I try in the corner, to find the perfect pose. I watch your hair as you spin lazy circles on the floor. But when I try to speak I just can't take it anymore.
Talk to me, tell me why I'm falling apart. Run to me, pull your sword and run it through my heart.
Midnight in my bedroom, I'm cold and fast asleep. On the breeze you come to me, and slowly start to speak. You said, "I'm sorry that you're bleedin' baby, I'll take away your pain." You kiss my cheek without a sound and slowly walk away.
I drove by your apartment, to see if you were home. Then I called my number, to check the message on my phone. "No new messages" in burning monotone.
