Story Behind the Song
OK, I putting my heart on my sleeve here, but so be it. The Small Voice is alluding to Elijah's experience in the cave when his world was crumbling around him in a chaos of earthquake, wind and fire, but a "still, small voice" helped him keep it together so that he could get on with his powerful work. The trumpet is a metaphor for the small voice. Among the small melodic fragments used in this tapestry are Beethoven's Ode To Joy and an old protestant hymn, words by J.G. Whittier and music by F.C. Maker. The style of the structure is loosely paying homage to Terry Riley's piece, "In C." Each fragment is played a random number of times and the player moves on to the next one. All that is stipulated is that the musicians allow each large section (identifed in the score) be allowed to "coalesce for a while" before allowing the chaos to drift back. In this case, I am the only musician, so I played each sequence (about 20 of them) during different sessions to avoid too much matchng. The trumpet (small voice) is constantly improvising around the major quotes, hinting at the central peaceful theme which is trying to burst out of the noise until the end, when the small voice has fianlly shaken the shackles of the large ensemble covering it up and is allowing the "still dews of quietness" to have the final word. I believe that we are each experiencing our own awakening to the still small voice speaking to each of us telling us who we really are and why we are here. All we have to do is focus and listen and we'll see it and hear it.
