Story Behind the Song
I played for many years in a kick ass, hard edged, blues rock trio called, 'Black Book'.
Our motto was; NO Dinner Sets, NO Barry Manilow Medleys and NO Background Music For Polite Conversation. ANY QUESTIONS!!! As you might expect, there weren't too many places that we could play, but one of the regular crowds that did enjoy us was the wild and crazy 'Biker" clubs that booked us regularly for their parties, and what parties they were. Through the years of proudly being known as a 'Biker Band' I made many observations about the brothers and their women. The one that stuck in my mind the strongest was how they looked after one another when maybe a member had consumed too much of 'whatever' to be riding a Harley home at 100 mph. The women, especially, would look after their 'old man' if he was in bad shape. I've seen them go around to the other brothers to get help loading him into the backseat of a car so he wouldn't ride his bike. The brothers would look after his ride and keep it safe, they had lost too many others and didn't want to lose another. So I wrote this song, and dedicated it to the 'Bikers of Northern Calif. but, especially to their Ladies who helped them survive' The first copy that I got was presented to Duke, who was then the head of the 'Humpers', to play at one of their meetings. I will always thank them for their inspriration!
Lyrics
Race With The Devil
'Dedicated To'
The bikers of Northern California and the ladies who keep them alive
Verse 1
Lookin' back over my shoulder, I've outrun my past
Left those demons behind me at last
As long as I can keep movin' with you by my side
The road is my savior and you're my guide
Chorus
We RACE WITH THE DEVIL, the wind in our hair
With your arms tight around me we can go anywhere
Two wheels on the highway, the will to survive
It's that RACE WITH THE DEVIL that keeps me alive
Verse 2
From my own self destruction, to your saving grace
Through impossible dreams that I chased
With those Hellhounds upon me, the touch of your hand
Gave me the strength and the courage to be a man
Chorus
We RACE WITH THE DEVIL, the wind in our hair
With your arms tight around me we can go anywhere
Two wheels on the highway, the will to survive
It's that RACE WITH THE DEVIL that keeps me alive...(INST)
Bridge
Out on the highway everything is so clear
Left those hard times behind, no more pain, no more fear
It's you and the highway that helps me survive
I need a woman like you, babe, to keep me alive
Chorus
We RACE WITH THE DEVIL, the wind in our hair
With your arms tight around me we can go anywhere
Two wheels on the highway, the will to survive
It's that RACE WITH THE DEVIL that keeps me alive
Outro
We RACE WITH THE DEVIL, the wind in our hair
With your arms tight around me we can go anywhere
Two wheels on the highway, we will survive
It's that RACE WITH THE DEVIL that keeps us.......
Yeah, it keeps us..........,keeps us alive.......
It's that RACE WITH THE DEVIL that keeps us alive
