Story Behind the Song
STILL SEARCHIN' tells the story of a persons' quest to find the murderer of
his/her brother. It has the melancholy of unresolved woes and enigma of someone on a mission.
What was the motivation for the song?
I call it a modern-day cowboy song. Take the drama of the ghetto and put it
in the context of an old-western movie. I was also inspired by "I Shot the
Sheriff" and the political/social allegories in that song.
What do the lyrics mean?
Take them as you wish. The lyricas are very blunt, but I meant them to be symbolic.
Where was the song written?
I had the idea of doing such a song a couple years ago, so I came up with the
concept and wrote the lyrics and melody walking down the street. I worked on
the chord changes with my fiance (he's a guitarist and songwriter).
How long did it take to write it?
A day or so.
How long to record?
One day for basic tracking with the band. One day for vocals. One or 2 days
for organ, guitar and backup overdubs.
How many takes? etc.
The band was very comfortable with the song, so I think we did about 4 takes
and we had what we needed. I went in and did the final lead vocals separately. I did about 4 takes and then zoned in on one or two trouble lines to get them to my liking.
Lyrics
STILL SEARCHIN'written by Maya Azucena & Tim Ellis
VERSE I
I BEEN WALKIN,WAY PAST SUNRISE
AND I'M STILL WALKIN' WAY PAST SUNDOWN
AND I'LL BE SEARCHIN' 'TIL I FIND
HE WHO'S GUILTY OF THE CRIME
IF ANYBODY COMES 'ROUND FOR ME (TELL HIM)
VERSE II
I BEEN RIDIN' THROUGH THE CANYONS
AND I'M STILL RIDIN' ON THE RANGE
AND I'LL KEEP SEARCHIN' 'TIL THE SHOWDOWN
WITH THE MURDERER, OF MY BROTHER BROWN
IF ANYBODY COMES 'ROUND FOR ME (TELL HIM)
CHORUS
I'M STILL WALKIN' MAMA
I'M STILL WALKIN'PA
I'M STILL SEARCHIN, SEARCHIN
FOR THE ONE WHO DONE ME WRONG
AND I, I, I, I....I'M STILL SEARCHIN
IF ANYBODY COMES 'ROUND FOR ME (TELL HIM)
(SOLO)
VERSE III
I'LL BE WAITIN' ON EVERY CORNER,
EVERY BARROOM, EVERY TOWN
MIGHT BE TOMORROW, TEN YEARS,
YOU'LL NEVER KNOW WHEN
MAKE NO MISTAKE, BOY,
WE WILL MEET AGAIN!
AND WHEN THAT NOOSE SLIPS TIGHT AND SNAPS YOUR SPINELESS NECK, YOU'LL
HAVE
FINALLY PAID FOR MY BROTHER'S DEATH!
CHORUS
I'M THROUGH WALKIN' MAMA
I'M THROUGH WALKIN' PA
I'M THROUGH SEARCHIN, SEARCHIN
FOR THE ONE WHO DONE US WRONG
CAUSE I, I, I, I....I MADE HIM GONE
(AND) ONCE IN A BLUE MOON YOU'LL FIND,
THE SENTENCE FITS THE CRIME
