Story Behind the Song
I was looking down at the dark still waters from the Tar River bridge one day, thinking something like "Whoever said that rivers roll never got a look at this sucker."
This was recorded live at "Pirate Underground" East Carolina University, on 1/26/02. The audience really seemed to relate to this song--East Carolina Students were among those displaced by the flood of '99.
Lyrics
whoever said that rivers roll never took themselves to stroll along Tar River
Tar River does not roll.
whoever said that rivers flow never took a look below Tar River Bridge
Tar River does not flow.
Tar River don't run, Tar River does not flow
Tar River don't run, Tar River does not roll
It oozes, creeps, and crawls, you know
it seeps and stalls but Tar River don't roll.
I spent many a swelterin' day watching that water just lay
and the white sun sucked my life away
As insects kamikaze dive you wonder if you're still alive
or just some shufflin' zombie in decay
Tar River don't run, Tar River does not flow
Tar River don't run, Tar River does not flow
It oozes, creeps, and crawls, you know
it seeps and stalls but Tar River don't roll.
that old river like a mean old man who don't want to know what he don't understand
best him alone let him ramble in his mind
just a little word here to the wise don't get him riled, don't make him rise
like with Hurricane Floyd and the flood of '99
Tar River don't run, Tar River does not flow
Tar River don't run, Tar River does not flow
It oozes, creeps, and crawls, you know
it seeps and stalls but Tar River don't roll.
Someday but when I cannot tell, I'll break free of this torturous spell
can't say how I will or how I'll go
I might be laughin' I might be cryin', might be runnin' I might be flyin'
sure's hell won't be swimmin', that I know
Tar River don't run, Tar River does not flow
Tar River don't run, Tar River does not flow
It oozes, creeps, and crawls, you know
it seeps and stalls but Tar River don't roll.
