Story Behind the Song
"Memories for Mary" was composed over a three week period in February 2002. The impetus was a solo piano work I heard on the "Atmospheres" digital music channel. I though to myself "I can do that." There was no initial inspiration for the music, just an urge to compose a full length piece using my expensive University of Miami knowledge of theory and composition. The composition is better than the performance, which is somewhat choppy, but after 20 takes I finally got one with no mistakes and said that's a wrap. As my playing skills increase, I'd like to re-record it with a more gentle touch. The title came to me after listening to the song several times. For some reason, I had recurring images of my Grandmother sitting in her rocking chair looking out the window, trying to recall days gone by. She often gets frustrated with herself for not being able to remember things that were once part of her everyday life. So I thought maybe I could give her some new, happy memories to make up for those she has lost. This is for you Gram.
