A really haunting song that flies in the face of the idea that there can ever be anything honourable or glorious about war. It explores the sadness and loss of those who have directly or indirectly exerienced war and it cries out for a brighter new world.

    Story Behind the Song
The first verse of this song was written as a direct reaction to the words that accompany the annual British Legion sale and distribution of poppies each year. I have never felt that I could wear a poppy with pride and I never will. With sadness, yes! With pride, no! Having played this down the phone to Steve, we jointly composed the second verse and worked together on the musical arrangement. I find the song intensely moving and challenging.

    Lyrics
    Verse 1.
Dark born into the darkness, ride a thousand might men,
And a thousand weeping wives shall not receive their love again.
For, the spears of a sworn enemy shall pierce their valiant breast
And put these mighty warriors to a battlefield of rest

    Chorus:
And the poppies red shall come and shrivelled brown shall go,
And only the blacksmith's hammer will ever really know
