Story Behind the Song
The story behind this song is unknown, but it was discovered to be one of the numbers performed by Judy Garland's parents (Frank and Ethel Gumm) under the stage names Jack and Virginia Lee, shortly after their marriage in 1914. This information was noted in The Grand Rapids Herald Review. There was a musical by the same name on Broadway about this time, but by a different composer.
Lyrics
Listen one, listen all,
Listen, listen hear my call;
I have something to tell you
It's all about a winsome girl,
She's been tried- been found true,
She's a jewel through and through;
Oh my how we all love her,
Why she's the best girl in the world.
For there's a maid in America
"Made in America"
A maid for eve'ry boy,
For there are none that are prettier,
None that are wittier,
They fill your heart with joy.
Born and bred in good old U.S.A.
Mighty proud of them too, I'll say.
For there's a made in America
"Made in America"
A maid for every boy.
