The song Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, taken from the classic Robert Louis Stevenson
novel of the same name, was written at a time of awful personal anguish.
Like the book, this song deals with the hidden duality (good and evil)
in human nature, and the horror associated with the darker side. |

Story Behind the Song
Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde is written in the first person, but as someone else talking, as a sort of character study narrative. Mainly, it's meant to be like the one-sided converstions that take place between doctors and patients.
Here, the lyrics are structured to convey the doctors 'treatments' of torture, once his obsessive and paranoid behavior give way to sexual frustration. Gradually describing exactly where these twisted 'experiments' are administered, the overwhelming emotions of anger and the resulting abuse become evident.
Figuratively, this macabre song was invented from a real-life situation in which a seemingly calm man would inexplicably go crazy, and act out deep-seeded aggression towards the woman he supposedly loved. As this became physically violent and mentally abusive, this song seemed a natural metaphor for describing the unnerving environment surrounding these people.
One of the heavier EGO songs, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde was produced to be violent in tone, pounded out from the drum part up to the guitar addition in verse three, and seemed to compliment the story by fitting the meaning of the lyrics.
