Story Behind the Song
Andrew came to me (Tre) one night with a rad lick in E minor and a desperate little Offspring-esque pregression. We finally finished it with the rest of the band maybe 2 weeks later and played as an instrumental for a few months until we hit the studio. Maybe a week earlier I was driving around and ended up sitting outside a church before the first service as the sun was coming up, and got to thinking how many of them actually gave a thought to why they were there, or anywhere for that matter. The thought actually came back to me in a dream the night before we were recording vocals the next Saturday, and the minute I woke up I wrote out the lyrics. It's not just about a blind belief in God, but in anything. People have got to start thinking about their lives before they're over. Recorded a few hours later with no rehersal... Two takes, and W.A.R. was finally complete.
Lyrics
Two waves, one frequency
Caught chasing their spade soul
As the rest all take bets
On who makes it home
The falling sun casts longer
Shadows than before
But can we believe
We'll live to see them reappear
While darkness holds the floor
The flashlights signal to the sky
Promising themselves eternal life
Trapped inside this sprial of
A fear of God and truth and even...
What's to fear? A man you've never seen
Never seen
One life, one day to live
One answer yet unknown
Don't make history before your life unfolds
2000 years our hearts sit readily at war
So can you stare it in the face
And say you're not afriad
To die and be reborn
The victims of our own design
Practicing our prayers to leave that night
Remind me of the way we used to be
So I can pray for one more chance
To live, to die, to fight, to breathe
