    Story Behind the Song
Miracles is a song Jonathan English wrote one night his freshman year in college. He was sitting up at 3:30 in the morning in his one-bedroom apartment, waiting to surprise his girlfriend at her apartment at 4:30 am when she would be leaving to start a long day with the University of Texas Longhorn band.
With MTVs After Hours videos playing in the background, Jonathan changed the strings on his guitar to pass the time, and broke it in by playing the riff that would become Miracles.
I was sitting there, watching videos on MTV, and wanting desperately to write a song that wasnt so musically complicated, Jonathan says. The band wasnt interested in playing pop songs then, and writing songs was a real chore. I think I wrote the music just out of rebellion against how hard it was to play our music at the time.
But the lyrics, well, thats a different story.
Ive gotten about a zillion different interpretations of what these lyrics mean from everyone who hears the song, says Jonathan. The truth is that sometimes I just sit down and write lyrics, with no conscience intent. Some words just have the right flavor, some words just have the right rhythm. It doesnt always mean what everyone thinks it means.
In this case, I had this story in my mind of young, stupid, Romeo and Juliet type love between some young kids that knew nothing about love except the feelings in their stomach. You know, like you felt back when you could get in trouble if you were caught kissing someone, because you were too young.
The song has this 4/4 country feel to it, so I figured it needed a story to it. I was listening to a lot or Robert Earle Keen at the time. I love the way he weaves stories. So this was my first shot at creating a fictional story for people to enjoy in a song.
Jonathan played the song for his girlfriend the next day (She was instantly curious about who this Janie girl was I was writing about,) and for his roommate. His roommate started asking him to play the song every night, and soon it was a party favorite. But Plow Monday was focusing on music that was more eclectic at the time, and the group didnt take to the decidedly poppy sound of the song.
But Jonathan recorded it anyway in his room over Christmas break from school, and it became one of the groups favorite songs.
Its still my favorite song on the album, says brother and drummer David English. Its just a great song.

    Lyrics
    Miracles
Words and music by Jonathan English

My mother told me not to talk to strangers
My dad says dont believe what mother says
My brother told me drinking was the answer
My sister told me lies were in his head

My daddy made me walk home from school late at night
He said learning cant stop when the day is done
Janie met me out there after school one night
And said Baby, be prepared to have some fun.

Now maybe mom and dad were wrong and brother sister too
But family never meant as much as you

Do you believe in miracles? Dont you believe?
Do you believe in miracles? Dont you believe?

I crawled through Janies window after school one night
I felt so cold I knew that shed be warm
Janie said her daddy tucked her in at night
I thanked her and I knew that wed been warned

We ran down to the forest hand in hand that night
I pressed her rosy lips against my own
We rolled all through that grass till darkness turned to light
And daylight told us we should both go home

Her parents met us on the porch and asked us where wed been
We didnt say a word, our grass stains turned to sin

I never saw her out there after school again at night
My brother said they took her far away
I couldnt sleep at all alone again that night
Without my Janie guiding me towards day

I ran down to the bridge above the rocks that night
I knew that there could be no other way
I said my prayers and readied to dismiss my life
Till I heard Janies voice across the way and shed say
