    Story Behind the Song
Jonathan wrote this song while he was sitting on the steps of his girlfriend's apartment, waiting for her to come out the door at 4:30 in the morning. She played in the Uiversity of Texas Longhorn band, and the band was being featured on the morning news. She wasn't expecting Jonathan to be there, but he surprised her.
He wrote the rest of the song after they got home that day. Feeling high on the relationship, and on life in general, he was oblivious to the fact that in a few days, she would tell him that it was over, and his entire life would change forever. After the breakup, he added the last verse.
5:30 News and several other songs emerged from the whole experience. Almost two years later, Jonathan and Plow Monday recorded them all into their new hit album: Blank.
They chose "5:30 News" to start the album, because according to Jonathan, that was the night that changed his entire world.

    5:30 News
words and music by Jonathan English
Special thanks to Catherine Comp for her background vocals

    It was 4:30 am
Still dark but the stars weren't out
They hid from the sun and you came down
You said, what are you doing here
You should be at home by now
But I couldn't sleep, so I came down

And we rode to the station, all dreary and dry
You never said no, and I never asked why
The coffee and donuts, the TV news
    The fringe on your shoulders
    No dirt on your shoes

And something was good to us
    It brought us this far
    Don't know what tomorrow is
    But here we are today

    Asleep on the table
    More coffee and sugar please
They call for the warm-ups and I'm alone
But I see you on TV
And I smile at you on the box
You say, next time come with me
    It'll be okay

The cameras are spinning, the drowsiness falls
The whole world is asleep when they give you the call
You march with your head up, they give me a chair
    I open my eyes
    And you're on the air

Then something has happened, you tell me to go
You say you don't need me, I say you don't know
Your emptiness saves you, my patience recedes
And I beg you to keep me, I'm down on my knees

    And I don't know what I did
    To bring this to me
You say that I have to go
    What did I do?
But I left a piece of me
    Beneath your stars there
And I'll never get it back
You meant so much to me

But you were gorgeous that morning
    On the 5:30 News
