An epic (6:35) jazz funk protest rap. Just when the list of abominable messes into which our misleaders have misled us becomes unbearable, the oratory ends with words of hope and inspiration. Notice the unusual time signature. Like an Indian raga, the entire form must be played through twice to get back to 1. Great musical satire in Steve's solo halfway through the song.
CD: Song For Mavis   Label: Capsicum Compact Discs
Credits: Composed and performed by Myro.

    Story Behind the Song
"2BFREE" was written for this CD, although it is based on a bass line which has been "haunting" Myro for years. Myro and Steve wanted to do something with a very contemporary feel that would hopefully reach
today's troubled youth. His heart filled with song, his soul with poetry, Myro's mind defies conventional wisdom, his wit overflowing with social and political satire. Myro writes, "WARNING: Parental discretion aside, this song contains explicit truths. Truth can get funky. Kids,
please try this at home, in the streets, throughout the universe. I dedicate this talking blues to Nelson Mandela, whose writing I've found inspirational." Note that all the instruments, except for the saxophones and flute, are actually synthesized.

    Lyrics
    (YOU MUST SET THE PACE)
Everybody's in a hurry, but they don't know where they're goin'.
If you go against the light, how can we keep the traffic flowin'?

    (HUMAN RACE)
For the first time in history we can plot our
    evolution.
You're either part of the problem
or you're part of the solution.

    (FACE TO FACE)
    The moment of truth is rapidly approachin';
    laws of nature in motion;
there's a change in the ocean.

    (CAN'T TRUST GOVERMENT)
It was born in the true spirit of revolution.
But after 200 years of political prostitution, political pollution,

    (WHERE IT WENT)
Now our country's run by multi-national
    corporations.
We all bow down to the great profit-nations.

    (VALUES BENT)
They celebrate their liberty to screw their fellow man,
    just wanna get it while they can;
    accountability be damned.

    (UNCLE SAM NEEDS YOU)
We got the greatest war machine. It's feared
    throughout the world.
It's the best for killing men, women, boys, and little girls.

    (SAD BUT TRUE)
It's comforting to think it's used to protect
    democracy.
But if you really believe that, you been watching too much tv.

    (WHAT GUNS DO)
When you're bombing innocent children, all those lofty ideals fail.
Can't close me on that sale.
    Guns and money prevail.

    (THE POOR GET POORER)
We got the greatest inequality of any
    industrialized nation.
And the gap widens at the fastest acceleration.

    [UB] (THE JUROR)
Nobody complains 'cause we've lost faith in the system.
Sure we had elections, but everybody dissed 'em, missed 'em. It really pissed 'em.

    (WHAT FUROR)
Do we just sit back and watch the rich getting richer?
    What's wrong with this picture?
If she's broke down, we gotta fix her!

    (THEY JUST TILT THE SCALES)
We got the most prisons and the most prisoners in 'em.
If your kids smoke a joint, the joint is where they send 'em.

    (FILL THE JAILS)
Meanwhile the supersuit crooks continue with their betting.
If they ever get nailed, their jail's a country club setting.

    (JUSTICE FAILS)
The rich get away with murder; it's a rich man's game.
If you're poor, you're to blame.
Take a number for a name.

    (JUST LEARN 2BFREE)
Our schools don't work; they're just another form of prison, stifling young minds and the creativity that goes with 'em.

    (A,B,C)
If our kids get smart, it'll be despite our
    ministrations.
Hopefully they'll overcome our so called
    education.

    (1,2,3)
How long can we expect them to see the world as we drew it?
    It's obvious we blew it.
Didn't know how to do it.

    (STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS)
Life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness.
That's what we were promised, but instead we got this mess.

    (PICK YOUR FIGHTS)
Check out Mahatma Ghandi and Martin Luther King.
Violence don't get it; civil disobedience is the thing.

    (BLACKS AND WHITES)
Divided we fall; united we stand.
    Every woman, kid, and man,
    do what you can!

    (YOU MUST TAKE NO JIVE)
    Hollywood, Washington, Madison Avenue.
They're busy working overtime to obfuscate your view.

    (BE ALIVE)
The only lesson you'll ever learn with your eyes glued to the tv
is how to live out your life in mediocrity, like a zombie.

    [THEN WHEN YOU'RE](NINETY FIVE)
And you look back at your life and wonder where it went.
Was it wisely spent? Just treading water, paying rent?

    (YOU DON'T NEED NO DRUG)
Your body is a temple and to set your spirit free,
you have to cherish it, preserve it.
    Don't change its chemistry.

    (GLUG-A-LUG)
40 oz. malt liquor or Dom Perignon.
Alcohol is poison, but it's legally condoned.

    [YOUR GRAVE](IS DUG)
If you think you need drugs or booze to get by,
you'll never get high, in misery you'll die.

    (DON'T YOU SUCK NO SMOKE)
We're finally gettin' wise to the nicotine
    pushers'lies.
Joe Camel's goofy grin while your loved one dies.

    (AIN'T NO JOKE)
It might be the most addictive of all the killer drugs.
That's been the plan all along of those executive killer thugs.

    (YOU GO BROKE)
Why pay those thugs your money in exchange for your death?
It might as well be meth.
You choke on your last breath.

    (EMBRACE GOD WITHIN)
All the truth and beauty of the universe inside.
Your heart, your soul, your mind. Just open up wide.

    [LET THE](SPIRIT WIN)
Don't be led astray by all those sugar coated
    temptations.
You'll find the highest high through your deepest meditations.

    (ZERO IN)
Focus on the clear bright light within.
    Don't be fumblin'.
Watch for traps. Don't stumble in.

    (TRUST YOUR HEART AND SOUL)
You feel a great potential waiting to be realized.
A beautiful life much better than you ever
    fantasized.

    2B(WHOLE)
You gotta really love yourself to let yourself be free,
to live the life you love, to fulfill your
    destiny.

    (WATCH THE GOAL)
Inch by inch, if you're headed in the right
    direction,
    you'll make the cosmic connection.
    It's a natural selection.
