Story Behind the Song
Basically, I tried to depict the motion and emotion of the sea. The sea has always been a strong influence on my life. Intrinsic to the harmonic movement and rhythmic influence is the music of Korea, my home. Hence the use of the Korean pentatonic scale and the typical Korean melodies and rhythms. The opening section portrays the calmness and serenity of the sea through the use of undulating arpeggios in the melodic accompaniment. The second section is a departure, presenting a number of different styles showing the many faces of the sea: bounding melodies, periods of calm, and seething storms. the return of the opening material represents a resolution to the conflict of the middle section, while reassuring us of the greatness of nature. I wrote this piece at the suggestion of my band director, Mr. Fredrick Lange, and have dedicated it to him on the 50th anniversary of his birth. I could not have written it without his encouragement and help".
"Bada" received its premier in December of 1998 by the Davis High School Symphonic Band, and has subsequently been performed at the "Festivity of Bands" at California State University, Sacramento, and the Golden Empire Band Festival. In January, it was played to a large, receptive audience at the inauguration of State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Delaine Eastin. It was also a finalist in the Young Composer Competition at Indiana University. (Composed in November, 1999)
